No One Wants
With each year, marathons gain greater and greater popularity. The TCS New York City Marathon is among the most prominent events, attracting tens of thousands of runners from across the world annually and receiving extensive media coverage.
Not all events garner similar levels of attention, however. It has been seven years since Russia occupied Crimea and started a war in Eastern Ukraine. It has since de facto occupied two Ukrainian regions, forcing over 1.5 million people to flee their homes.
In light of this situation, Ukrainian postal company Nova Poshta has launched another “New York” marathon — in a small Ukrainian town also named New York, in the Donetsk region, less than a mile from the front line. A marathon that aims to remind the world that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing.
In the first ten days following launch, 35 500 runners have joined the Marathon No One Wants to Run! Every runner will receive a starter pack and a medal with an inlaid piece of bullet casing from Eastern Ukraine.
Anyone still willing to join us is welcome to do so online. To support Ukraine, simply download and print one of the template starter numbers found on our site. Use it to run the Marathon at any time and over any distance, regardless of your location.
As thanks for spreading the word, we would like to offer you a digital marathon medal created by Canadian-based Ukrainian designer Yurko Gutsulyak, who holds over 150 professional awards.
Share a video or photo of your run along with info about our project on social media, use the hashtag #marathonnoonewantstorun, and don’t forget to tag our insta page @marathonnoonewantstorun and @novaposhta.official. You will be helping to raise worldwide awareness of Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine. Running the Marathon is free, yet your concern is priceless.
